This is an original antique handwritten letter on the elaborate illustrated letterhead of the Cairo Iron Works of Reed & Mann of Cairo, Illinois. This is a single sheet with a large vignette of a steam engine dated December 21st, 1868. The letter is signed Reed & Mann and appears to be a letter advertising the firms services to a prospective customer in Shubata, Mississippi. The letter has printed script that reads in part: CARIO IRON WORKS, Ohio Levee, REED & MANN, Iron And Brass Founders, Blacksmiths, General Machinists, Portable And Stationary Steam Engines And Boilers And General Machine Work, Saw And Grist Mill Machinery, Tobacco Lard and Hemp Screws, Iron And Brass Castings, Propeller Wheels, Railroad And Bridge Work, Shafting Pulleys and Hangers, Forging Of All Descriptions – Every description of Job Work done in the best manner and on the shortest notice According to information found online the firm of Reed & Mann was established in St. Louis in the 1850s by Hugh Mann and Joseph. The firm decamped to Cairo about 1861 and according to an obituary on Hugh Mann were involved in the construction of Union Ironclads during the Civil War presumably in conjunction with the Union Iron Works of St. Louis owned by James Eads. This letter is an original antique produced in 1868 and is in very good condition and very suitable for framing or display. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
