Detrick & Harvey Machine Company: Horizontal Drilling, Boring & Milling Machines, 1910 Catalog, by Detrick & Harvey Machine Co., Baltimore, MD. Photocopied reproduction by Nation Builder Books, Mebane, NC, 2012, 7 1/2 x 10 paperback, 36 pages. Please note this book is a reproduction, not an original. In the late 1800?s. The Detrick & Harvey Machine Company was a leading maker of large machine tools for milling and boring market, Few other companies offered machine tools as large as Detrick & Harvey’s. In fact, the firm’s ability to handle and precisely machine large pieces of machinery led to Detrick & Harvey becoming a special job machine shop, in addition to being a major builder of large precision machinery. During World War One, the U.S. military turned to Detrick & Harvey for assistance, and awarded the firm a large number of contracts. The company became so big that it began subcontracting some work out and, becoming one of the largest government contractors of the time. These special capabilities, and the huge contracts they attracted, soon came to the attention of Charles Schwab, president of the Bethlehem Steel Corp. In August 1915, Detrick & Harvey was purchased in whole by Bethlehem Steel. In pictures on the internet, machine tools built after this acquisition bear name plates cast with the name “Bethlehem Steel Corp., Detrick & Harvey Plant.” When Bethlehem sold off Detrick & Harvey ten years later, D&H was employing 230 men at its Baltimore plant located on East Preston Street. The machine tools pictured in this catalog are especially interesting because of their large size. The “No. 4 or 96’’ Machine” pictured below had both vertical and horizontal travel of 96 inches, with a maximum distance from the work bed to the center of the spindle of 144 inches. The first 21 pages of the catalog show and describe Detrick & Harvey’s horizontal drilling, boring and milling machines. The last part of the catalog show and describe the company’s universal titlting and rotary tables. The last page shows a 48’’ open side planer.
