As in recovery from any war or trauma, our nation and each person wanted desperately to find security, happiness, peace, constructive and substantial ways to see a stable future. Into this world came the ready build home industry, offering folks affordable housing they could purchase “ready cut” so that assembly as something they could see as a possibility to do themselves or with the help of their friends and family and neighbors. What could be more wonderful after a time of disaster and uncertainty than to have your own new fresh home to start a future in? From Stickley to Aladdin Homes, everyone tried hard to out do the other fella in terms of quality, value, interesting designs, innovations in assembly and logistics, and marketing. This 1920 catalog from Aladdin Homes is filled with a diversity of home plans and photographs sufficient to give even the most uninspired amongst us, either prospective homebuilder or architect, a surplus of ideas and possibilities to use, either directly or in new designs. One of the interesting things we have found looking at these catalogs, home plans and pictures, is that the presence of the combination of a plan and picture in a book with such diversity of plans gives a kind of a comparison of features and faults that is very illustrative of the individual design components and their values or risks. Looking at the long and huge roofs of some designs one can see the possibilities for serious problems in high wind loading (tornado lifted roofs) or in high static loading (massive snowfalls) as but one example. One can also see huge thermal advantages to the same roofs in hot climates with vents pulling air thru the homes nicely at even low wind speeds and the upper stories giving huge living areas that are pleasantly warm in cool weather. In short, looking at, and thinking about these various designs is both stimulating from a design and lifestyle viewpoint, but also educational from a functional analysis viewpoint. I can think of no better or more useful tool for a homebuilder, prospective home-owner, or architect or engineer to have and review than catalogs of homes with plans and pictures.
