A popular way to detect and measure leaks is with a helium leak detector. This process is often used in automotive components and gas lines. A team from MKS Instruments Inc., Andover, Md., has developed the MKS PICO Leak Detector (sniffer version). Current detectors weigh between 14 and 56 kg, with volumes between 0.032 cm3 and 0.074 cm3. The PICO detector weighs only 7.2 kg, with a volume of 0.051 cm3, and features a backlit touch-screen LCD display. Essentially, this makes the MKS model the only portable helium leak detector available.
