Type 316 is a chromium-nickel stainless steel identical to type 304 except that it contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum. This addition increases overall corrosion resistance increasing resistance to salt water and other chloride solutions and provides better strength at high temperatures. Improved corrosion resistance against sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic and tartaric acids. This alloy can be welded but is generally considered less weld-able than type 304.
