In my Opinion This is a Samuel Rust, N.Y., Printing Press. This would be the 1st True Washington Press, made by it's Inventor, Samuel Rust, Approximately 180 Years Ago. THIS  PRESS  IS  AN  EXTREMELY  IMPORTANT  PIECE  OF  AMERICAN  HISTORY. The Platen Size is 23" x 36 1/4".    This Press Was Built for Newspaper Printing.   Cast into the Top of the Press is a Stylized Eagle, it's Very Hard to Make Out in my Pictures. Below the Eagle is a Wreath with What Look Like Berries, Surrounding Where the Brass Name Plate Once Was. On Each side are Floral Medallions. Also Note the Cross Hatched Diamond Pattern all Around the Press. All of these Characteristics are typical of a Rust press.     Unfortunately the Brass Nameplate has been Pried Out & Removed, Many Years Ago. Perhaps for Brass Shortages During the War Time Years, Which in this Case Could Have Included The Civil War ! I had Heard Rumors of a Press Similar to This One on the East Coast with the Nameplate Still in the Press.   Rust and Turney were in business from 1821 - 1829 Samuel Rust was in business from 1829 - 1832   Rust holds 2 patents: 1. The Figure 4 Toggle Mechanism, May 13, 1821.      Rust's Figure 4 Toggle was an improvement in that it Provided Greater Leverage in the Application of Power.       Please Note that in Viewing the Close-up Picture of the Rear of the Press, You Will Clearly See the Large - 4 - That the Toggle is Named For.     2. Strong, Wrought Iron Bars running through the Weaker, Hollow, Cast Iron Frames, April 17, 1829.     The Newly Patented Frame Eliminated the One Piece Heavy Cast Iron Casting.     His Patent Replaced it with 2 Much Smaller Cast Iron Pieces, 1 Top and 1 Bottom, with 2 Much Stronger, Wrought Iron Vertical Rods,     that were Enclosed in 2 Light Weight, Hollow Cast Iron Fluted Columns.   By doing some Research, I would estimate that this press was manufactured some where in the area of the late 1820's or early 1830's. This Press has an Extremely Light Weight Construction. Note the Platen with  it's Thin, Widely Spaced Webbing, Typical of a Press Manufactured in This Era. And the Press can also be Dismantled for Easier Transport, which was what Rust was Striving to Achieve.   In approx. 1834, Hoe & Company Acquired the Rust Company, Primarily to Acquire Rust's Patents. The Early Examples of the Hoe Presses that I have seen, the Floral Medallions were Replaced with Images of George Washington & Benjamin Franklin. The Eagle, Wreath, all Diamond Patterns and Brass Nameplate were removed from the new Hoe design. Hoe had "Washington Press" Cast into the Top of the Press, then "R. Hoe & Co", New York under the former.   The Leather Straps and the Fixtures That They Attached to for moving the bed are Missing. Also the Wood Crank Handle for Moving the Bed has been Replaced with a newer Knurled Steel Handle. I have checked the bed and it has a slight low spot in the center area of .001 to .002, which if OK, and normal.  This press has an old paint job that could have been done 30 year's ago or so. All I did is wipe it down with a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and new engine oil. I have not disassembled and / or reassembled this press. It Would Guess the weight at Approx. 1,200 Lbs., and is 72" Tall.   There is no Tympan or Frisket with this press. If this is a problem for you call me Before Bidding. I have made them before with good results, but we will need to talk about the details first.    This is local pick-up only item, no shipping. I am not required to and will not skid or crate this machine as part of the sale. You can pick it up here at no charge, un-skidded. If you are a long distance away, I can skid the press in 1 piece and load it onto your truck for an extra $350.00, added to the sale price. Call me before bidding if this is the case so we can discus the variables. Either way, all of the hiring of the transportation / trucking and all liability will be the buyers responsibility and a bill of lading must be signed before any loading takes place. Payment must be received via PayPal or bank drawn cashier's check sent overnight with confirmation #, and received by seller within 2 business days from the date of sale. I will give the buyer up to 30 days to pick-up the machine, with no storage charge involved. After this 30 day period a storage charge of $1.00 per sq. ft. per month will apply. Allow 2 ft. extra both dimensions for fire / safety purposes. If storage is not paid seller has the options available under the Indiana Warehouseman's Act. No sales out of the USA. No overseas crating.  This may be negotiable if you call me to discus this at least 24 hours before the end of the listing and before bidding. Please, no bidders with 0 or negative feedback.
