This unique and unusual letter file box is 'hand-made' from cigar boxes that are usually pine like this one. Items like this one were oftentimes made from orange and apple crates also. This item dates 1940's and has a very vintage styled decoupage done on it. Decoupage began in France around 1946 and is the act of cutting out paper pictures, gluing them to a wood surface, and then applying several coats of lacquer or varnish over them. The decoupage work on this piece dates again,1940's and shows cartoon characters of the period here in America (zoom-in pictured #1). The letter box has yellowed over time as it has the original varnish of the time applied to it. This is an untouched piece of primitive 'Americana Art' and is very similar to 'Tramp Art' of the time as it is made from cigar box wood however, there is no carving on it like most 'Tramp Art'. The cartoon characters applied to the box and varnished over are quite humorous as they are people made from vegetables giving this piece a kitchen motif (zoom-in pictured #1).  The inside of the box is divided in two making two nice sized slots for outgoing mail or recipes for cooking & baking since it has a kitchen motif (pictured #3). It is in 'good' condition for its age however, a small piece of decoupage has peeled from the surface of the  box on the lower right hand side (zoom-in pictured #1). The box measures 9 3/4" long X 3 3/4" deep X 4 3/4" tall at its tallest point. It is nailed together with very tiny brads that are sunk in probably with a hand-held punch of some sort. Pictured # 2, #4 & #5 are the right side, left side, and back of the box respectively. The underside is not pictured as there is nothing special about it. Americana Art is 'hand-made' or primitive and is art that reflects American culture in the day it was made. In this piece the decoupage cartoon characters of the time shows this.
