Antique GOLD/METAL ELECTROPLATER/ ELECTROFORMER-1920's/30's A1 ART DECO Bakelite   USES: ~This is a functional antique unit.  It is used to plate or cover any object desired with nickel, copper, silver, or gold, or any other metal.  To plate with gold, the first 3 metals need to be applied first.  Another educated person on line thinks this unit may have been used to set dental moulds, but I don't have any idea.  ~It can also be used to reproduce small items.  Machine was made to be used as dental/medical/surgical laboratory equipment. ~It almost certainly dates to the 1920's or 1930's.  Check out the remarkable lines, shapes, and decoration of many aspects this machine!  It is classic, 100%, unadulterated Art  deco in style and design. CONDITION: ~Machine smells clean with nothing burnt.  No arcing or melting.  It appears to be complete.  Machine, unit, and all accompanying equipment is very clean.  Gauge is very clean inside as well as outside, and its crystal is very clear. ~Machine has not been tested.  The only reason is that I have neither the means, the knowledge, nor the tools to do so.   ~I'd be very surprised if this unit didn't work!  It looks like it has always been respected, well-kept, well-treated, and well-maintained.      GENERAL INFO: ~It measures 5-1/4 inches wide, 8-1/2 inches long (deep), and 8-1/4 inches tall.  ~Remarkable is the fact that the entire unit is 100% pure black Bakelite.  This was the ancestor of plastic, and used prominently in the 1920's, 1930's, and up to the 1940's. ~Someone on eBay currently is selling just the 2.5 inch gauge for ths unit by itself for $29.00.  Another body on eBay in Italy is currently selling one of these identical machines, visibly trashed and once quite damp, for $59.00.  He stipulates honestly that it does not work and that it is for parts only. ~Apparently, the gauge is partly an ammeter, although I'm not sure.  It also tells how many dies are in the plating tank.  Top says "DIES IN TANK" in large block letters.  ~Middle of gauge says name of unit: "JUNIOR ELECTROFORMER" as well as the maker: "HANAU ENGINEERING CO., INC.    BUFFALO, N. Y.  U.S.A." ~In looking at old records, I see that Hanau Engineering Co. describes what they make as the following: electro-forming equipment, pharmaceutical, surgical, medical, dental, and veterinary apparatus and instruments, artificial limbs, eyes and teeth; orthopedic articles; suture materials.  Aside from this unit, they make a dental blowtorch, denture curing units, and dental spray devices.   YOUTUBE:  ~YouTube has an astounding amount of information, "how-to's", and videos on many aspects of this.  A lot of simplified instructions.  And it's all free!  There are suppliers of metal plating solutions on there as well as at hardware stores. ~There is also really good information on YouTube about how to make money with a machine and skill such as this.  It is pretty amazing to see how much money could be made by the enterprising and artistic person!  PROSPECTIVE USERS OF THIS UNIT:  ~Only other items needed are a couple alligator clips and your metal solutions.  These would be for any metal you want to use to plate another item.  It looks like that should be all you need to get started!  ~HINT: Apparently, since I last recently heard, a great, very inexpensive substitute for copper plating solution is "ZEP Root Kill"!  A REALLY inexpensive substitute! SPECIFIC FEATURES & ATTRIBUTES OF THIS UNIT: ~Specs on back say, "AC 120V    0.15 AMPS    50-60C".  Patent number on back places unit in the mid-1930's date. ~Glass bowl for holding plating solutions is from the 1930's.  It is original and is a classic 1930's Art Deco design.  2 alligator clips could also be used from the unit to a larger tank for a larger item. ~There are 5 electrodes used for metal plating.  These are also included and original.  They are in great shape, are clean, and they work. ~Chrome or nickel-covered crane in front suspends any item that needs plating in the plating solution.     ~Rheostat on right side is used to adjust voltage needed for different metals and tasks. ~On right side is a neat old-fashioned ON/OFF rocker switch. ~Back side of unit has a covering of louvered aluminum for ventilation to keep it cool.  It has a number, A-5973, most likely a model number.  ~Cord and plug are in great shape and tightly connected.  Cord is very long, strong, pliable, and made to commercial specs.  Both are made of antique hard rubber.  This is the kind of rubber made from trees. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY USE:   ~Can be used for a commercial plating business in a professional setting, at a shop or workshop of any kind, or simply at home. (21315I)
