ANTIQUE WALLPAPER PRINTING CYLINDER ROLLER - LAMP BASE   The printing surface of this cylinder consists of cells outlined with brass strips similar to the cells in cloisonne enamelware. The brass strips are pounded into a wood backing and filled with felt to hold the ink or dye. Smaller printing surfaces are brass. Paper rolls over a large drum cushioned with rubber or canvas. The printing cylinder picks up ink from another roller and transfers it to the paper.   The pattern printed by this cylinder is offset columns of baskets of roses linked with wreaths of smaller flowers. In the second image, you see a portion of the cylinder photographically unrolled. Some of these wallpaper printing cylinders have found an alternative use as lamp bases.   In the last half of the 19th century, American wallpaper designs consisted of floral motifs, geometric patterns, large wall murals and small repeated scenes. By far, most wallpaper patterns were repeated floral motifs. Colors were light and soft, similar to watercolors. The Victorians experienced an efflorescence of elaborate and garish wallpaper design. As Oscar Wilde lay dying, he said, “I am in a duel to death with this wallpaper. One of us must go.”   Length: 21 1/2 in.
