Available today is an APAI (Action Packaging Automation, Inc) Model ST2, Folding Header Card applicator with dual head stapler. You've all seen bags with a stapled header card. Hard Candies, Fishing Lures, Ear Plugs.. The list goes on and on. Poly bagging is the most economical way to retail package your product. If you dont want to print directly onto the poly bag (which can be somewhat expensive, and have very high minimum orders per print) you can attach a printed folding header card to the top of the bag. This gives you the option of nice retail printing, a method of hanging and relatively inexpensive header cards that most local printers can do. The header cards would have a folding crease already on them, but would be inserted into the ST2 "Magazine" in an unfolded fashion. The operator pushes the foot pedal switch once, and the machine reaches up and grabs one unfolded card from the magazine stack. It rotates the card downward into the sealing area and holds it open (partially folded at this point). The operator introduces the top of the bag into the folding area of the card and depresses the foot pedal once again. The small staple carriage moves forward to finish closing the card over the bag, and then both staples are fired simultaneously through the layers of the folded card and bag, which then secures the bag between the folded layers. The carriage backs out of the way and the machine waits for the next signal to bring in the next card. Id estimate cycle speeds of around 15-20 per minute, assuming the operator can get the bags into place quick enough. The card placing, folding, stapling happens pretty quick. This machine requires 120 volts (standard wall plug) and a source of compressed air. It creates its own vacuum for the card "picking" by using a venturi style vacuum generator. Set up is pretty easy. Set the magazine width for the width of your header card. The entire magazine assembly is adjustable up/down for proper placement of the fold. A.P.A.I. is still in business, located in Roosevelt, NJ.
