ATOMSPECTRA Research Group presents ATOM TAG – Bluetooth 4.0 Personal Radiation Detector for Smartphones and Tablets. 1. Overview. Atom Tag is a powerful but easy to use radiation detection device designed to use by non-professionals. It is intended to work with iOS and Adnroid smartphones or tablets via Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) connection. It is used to indicate the presence of ionizing radiation (X-rays, Gamma, Beta) in the environment and is suitable for various radiation detection and measurement tasks such as radiation level monitoring, land surveys, buildings and vehicles inspection, construction materials assessment, radioactive sources location, urban prospecting and so on. You can also use it in physical experiments and for educational purposes to demonstrate gamma photon or beta particles registration. Atom Tag contains a sensitive radiation detector (model SBM-20-1 Geiger tube, the industry standard used in many popular radiation detectors such as Terra, Radex or Soeks) and all the electronics needed to get readings from it. Sturdy plastic housing protects the Geiger tube and electronics. The smartphone (or tablet) is used to process and display data from the detector, it must have Bluetooth 4.0 (also known as Bluetooth Low Energy) wireless interface. ATOM TAG gets power from internal Li-ion battery, energy consumption is very low and it can work up to 2 months non-stop from one full charge. The dedicated "Dosimeter" app displays the results of measurement and provides a simple and easy interface to set the dose rate alarm and alert thresholds, adjust the parameters and many more. Note that Atom Tag is not hermetically sealed, so keep it away from rain and moisture. If water or moisture got inside Atom Tag please stop measurements and let it get dry. Don't use solvents to clean Atom Tag, wipe it with soft cloth if needed. Don't try to repair Atom Tag, return it to manufacturer for service if needed. Unauthorized repairs will void the warranty. Atom Tag Bluetooth connection and radiation measurement. Switch ON Bluetooth 4.0 function on your smartphone. Make sure that Atom Tag is charged and switched ON: it switches ON automatically when you connect the charger. Run the application. After short Bluetooth scan period (2-15 s) your setup is ready for measurements. Work modes. Your Atom Tag can work in two main modes: search mode and measurement mode. Toggling of these modes can be done by pressing button on screen. Search mode. In search mode reaction to radiation dose rate change is fast in expense of measurement accuracy. You can select between “Fast”, “Balanced” and “Accurate” search modes in iPhone application settings according to your needs. In search mode data from the sensor is analyzed using sliding window method, time to first reading is less than 1 minute in “Balanced” search mode under normal radiation background (0,1 uSv/h or 10 uR/h). After first reading indicated it will be updated every 2 seconds. Search mode is recommended for checking of land, vehicles, construction materials etc. Mesurement mode. In measurement mode Atom Tag gathers information from the sensor all the time until manual reset button will be pressed and indicates current statistical error which decreases with measurement time. You can start new measurement any time by pressing “Reset” button (iPhone) or entering measurement mode (Android) on the screen. Measurement mode is suitable for detecting very low activity sources by comparison two dose rates: background dose rate and dose rate close to possible source of radiation. Don't move your Atom Tag to get most accurate readings. Please note that statistical accuracy increases by square root law: you need to make four times longer measurement to get twice accurate result. Settings. The application lets you choose between measurement units, set dose rate and accumulated dose alarm level and many other parameters. We work on improvement of our applications, new features are added regularly. Please keep application up to date. Atom Tag can work in autonomous mode, without Smartphone connection, as a alarm. Dose rate alarm threshold can be set using smartphone app when connected. After measurement. After work close the application. Keep Atom Tag in dry place, away from sources of heat. Use original packaging for long-term storage and transportation. Limited warranty. The manufacturer guarantees Atom Tag to be free of factory defects in materials or workmanship. Warranty period is one year from the date of purchase. Physical damages and damages caused by water are subject to void the warranty. Charging cord is not covered by warranty.
