Q: What are the two most challenging things about beekeeping? A: 1) Finding the queen, and 2) keeping the smoker going! Now, while I probably can’t help you with the first, I think I can help you with the second. If you are like me, you have tried many techniques to keep your smoker going: burning wood pellets, burning leaves, burning burlap, burning charcoal, burning grass, etc. What I have found is that it took two elements to make it work: 1) a fuel source to generate the heat, and something to burn that generated smoke. Fuels that burned well generally did not make good smoke, and fuels that smoked real well never stayed burning. Getting the right combination always seemed to be a challenge for me. But, I have found a solution that works wonders for keeping my smoker going, and that is what I want to share with you. The solution is the smoker disks made from recycled cardboard. Now, as you probably know, cardboard burns pretty well, but it generally burns too fast and does not smoke enough to make good fuel. But, using a proprietary process, the burn rate of the cardboard is slowed down, which in turn makes the disks smolder and generate more smoke. All you do is light these with a lighter or torch (my preference) and toss them into the smoker. I use these disks when I check my hives and I find that 2-3 generates the amount of smoke I need and generally last about 30 minutes or more (depending on how much I squeeze the bellows). You can add more if you want more smoke, or use less if you need less smoke. And if you are working longer than the 30 minutes, you just light a few more and toss them in your smoker. These disks are lightweight, burn well and leave very little ash behind. Plus, they are made from recycled cardboard, so they help reduce waste in the landfill.
