Chapman Valve Mfg Co 1930s Book Photo Plates Dams Power Plants Water Supply Valves Etc. We are listing several books from the very early years of Chatman manufacturing company Boston Massachusetts. These books date back to the early years of the company and some are directly tied to management handwriting, and notes from changes in designs and patterns. These books are estate fresh to the market, and have not been seen by anyone, in almost 100 years. The dates of the books range from 1880 through the mid-1930s. We acquired these books all in one lot, but since they cover different aspects of the business and family will be selling them separately. We also will be listing original black and white 8 x 10 photographs of the company's production pieces, as well as a company photograph book containing 56 pages of inventory at the company sold one first opened up. Chapman valve started out as Chatman manufacturing company and was located at 77 Kilby St., Boston, MA. According to an ornamental Chatman valve clock they started in 1854 and produced fire hydrants with Babbitt metal seats. This location was where they produced the first style of hydrant below, #1703. Very little is known about this style hydrant and the Boston Massachusetts location. In 1874 a new large factory complex was built in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts and the company name was changed to Chatman valve manufacturing company was also here that Chatman introducer list 82 slide gate hydrant had made them famous. Chapman produced many thousands of these hydrants from 1874 to about 1930. All but the very last of these list 82 hydrants have Boston or Boston USA embossed on the upper barrels so it's unclear when the Boston facility was no longer used. Listing a fine example of projects completed in the 1930s ( era ) by one of the largest valve companies in the world. Anybody that knows the name of Chatman Valve Manufacturing Company knows where they started at and knows that their reputation was the best in the country, for being the best and biggest in the late 1800s. This book is an original factory produced an authorized by Chatman on some of the examples of the work they've done over the years and into the 30s, as most of the projects they have in this book are 1930s with a few earlier photos. There were 56 plates in all, the numbers on the plates are not in order, #1 to 56, these photos were pulled from many books of photos, of the companies jobs over the years and numbered one each one in the left-hand corner of the bottom. We start off a number #1 and end up a number #202, so they're just pulled from different stacks of photos. These extreme workmanship of different kinds of valves that the US needed to operate the country. From many different Dams, River spills, Water supply for Cities, Valves and Motors for all Aspects of Industry. What they're known for by most antique collectors, is the Chatman Valve made Fire hydrant, which they were famous for and made hundreds of thousands of them over the years. This book has been sitting for many years, and it has a heavy musty smell. There are cleaning methods for removing the odar, and we will let you do that. It is leather bound with a very nice textured finish. Each of the plates can be removed and added to other books by the removable screws, very nice feature. There are 56 plates in all, all black and white, most of them are 7 x 9 photographs. The pages themselves are 8 x 11 there are no rips tears are bends the back page and the front page photo are yellowish , the rest of the book is much more acceptable ! We will take 12 random pictures. This is an amazing book published about an amazing American company that started in the Civil War era. They stayed in business until the late 1930s and then closed. They were called back into service during World War II to help with the Manhattan project, the A-bomb. Closed down again and the factory site was left deserted for years. Till local government came in and removed all of the soil from the surrounding area of the factory because of radioactive materials contamination. By the late 1950s the land was totally restored. The CXhapman name and all rights to the company was bought up by the Crane Company.
