The center support beam prevents frame rotation under load. One center support is recommended for shelving units up to 84 inches wide and two beams are required for anything larger. Beams require securing to the frames with bolts for proper support. These center shelf supports can add up to 650 pound to the weight rating (uniformly loaded) of a shelf so they are perfect for commercial applications where you need a high weight capacity.
