This auction is for a 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" copper halftone professionally mounted on wood, type-high. The halftone image represents a monochrome rendition of the bottom right quarter of the famous chromolithograph by James Fuller Queen (please reference the third photo and follow the google instructions below).  There are no markings on the plate or wooden mount, so I'm not sure how old this is. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues in Philadelphia.  This image shows the saloon as it appeared in November of 1863. Located on a railroad hub linking the North and the South, the saloon was staffed by volunteers and provided relief for Union troops to soldiers on their way to or returning from battlefields in the South. Reference: [please Google ‘union volunteer refreshment saloon’] As shown on the proof, the lower left 3/8" of the halftone looks as if it were smashed in a gripper at one time.  The defect can be partially fixed using makeready.  Halftones are best printed on coated (calendared) stock with a slightly thinner ink.  This was printed on a Poco #0, but with proper preparation and inking, could also be printed on any of the heavier platen presses.   Note: I will include two proofs with the halftone.
