The short answer is yes: 1) The backing pad that comes with the tool is relatively hard and built for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) Sand Paper 2) You can easily convert to a soft backing pad (they're typically yellow) with either PSA or Hook-and-Loop (Velcro) to attach Hook and Loop Sand Paper 3) You can add any abrasive or grinding sanding accessories (make sure they're rated for at least 9,000RPM) as long as they have a 5/8"-11 female adapter, as the tool have a 5/8"-11 male spindle.
