Here we have for sale one Eico brand model 628 conductance-type tube tester. Don't know if this one was built from a kit, or if it was factory-built. The build quality suggests to me that it was factory-made, but who knows? The screws that hold the tube sockets in place have two nuts apiece on them, so somebody wanted them to stay put where they're mounted.  The power switch looks out of place because someone has added it to the tester. The original design used the "Line Adjust" control to shut off the tester. You turn this knob all the way to the left and it opens the power circuit. Not sure why the toggle switch seemed like a good idea.  This is a "Conductance Tester". That means that it won't measure a tube's ability to amplify signals. It simply puts a DC current through the tube and measures the tube's "quality" that way. Crude, but it also checks for leakage and shorts. Since those three types of tube fault will cause many of the performance problems seen in consumer audio/radio/television equipment, this was considered "good enough", especially at the low-ball price you would pay for this tester when it was marketed. A lower price  than a real-live "transconductance" tester would have cost you, at least.  So, there you have it. This was the cheapie model 50 or so years ago. The pictures tell the story. The overload lamp is broken. It's a screw-base type 42. The setup switches reveal some of the black silver oxide that forms on silver-plated switch contacts. Some of the tube sockets look a bit crusty on the outside, but pretty darn clean on the inside. The meter''s pointer moves freely, but that's all I know about that part. The roll chart has broken at the bottom end, just short of where it says "STOP", to tell you not to crank the thumbwheels any farther. The cellophane tape that secured the end of the roll chart to the bottom roller came loose. Looks as if that end of the chart caught in the gear teeth of one thunbwheel and tore when some wingnut just kept rolling the thumbwheel. I will leave the fine points of repairing the roll chart to the buyer. I will include a laser-printed copy of the original operating manual, with the 1964 chart updates. It's the same free PDF file you can find on the web, but it's better than no manual at all.  There is no cover. Don't see any hinges nor a latch, so I don't believe it came with one to begin with.  THIS ITEM IS SOLD FOR PARTS OR REPAIR ONLY! I have not plugged it in and I won't. That's the buyer's job. If it works, fine. If it won't, this is not my problem. It's the BUYER'S problem.  THIS IS AN AS-IS, WHERE-IS SALE. NO RETURNS OF ANY KIND FOR ANY REASON OF ANY KIND, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY SOUND! FOR PARTS OR REPAIR ONLY! It weighs just under ten pounds, so shipping won't be cheap. I will insure it for at least the final sale value, and ship via USPS Priority Mail.  PRIORITY MAIL COST WILL BE CLOSE TO FIFTY BUCKS TO FAR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, MORE LIKE THIRTY BUCKS TO CLOSER DESTINATIONS.  If you want to save money on shipping, contact me * BEFORE * you do the Ebay checkout and I'll adjust the invoice total for "Parcel Select". Cost tends to be between half and two-thirds of Priority Mail. Slower, too. We ship no later than the second BUSINESS DAY following receipt of payment.  ALL PURCHASES OUTSIDE THE USA WILL SHIP BY EBAY GLOBAL SHIPPING PROGRAM! YES, THE GLOBAL SHIPPING PROGRAM! How much will this cost?  NOBODY KNOWS, especially not me. Ebay will certainly tell the buyer after the sale is completed. They just won't tell me.  BUYERS OUTSIDE THE USA, PLEASE CONSIDER THIS FIRST.  All routine Ebay precautions apply. Scammers take your nonsense elsewhere.  Please.  Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
