This offering is for one of the Rarest Elgin engines you would hope to find in the Elgin line, pre Maytag. The 1/4 HP Elgin Engine and Wheel Works "Left Hand" Engine. Left hand meaning everything about this engine is backwards from the usual Elgin. It looks like a mirror image of the usual Elgin. The engine is built to run opposite direction of the regular engines and the exhaust even comes out the right side instead of the front. Carburetor is on the left, fins on the flywheel are oriented to blow the air over the engine while running in a direction that is backwards to the usual Elgin or Maytag. Look at the pictures and you will see what I mean. There are not many of these, there are only two others that I know of and they are exactly identical to mine. I am sure there are more but I do not know where. These are far and few between. There are some welds and repairs on fins and vanes. One vane has a piece missing. This engine also does something that the regular Elgin's do not do, Elgin cut a slot in the flywheel hub for a belt starter clip to catch in. The ink pen is pointing this slot out. This is only seen on these left hand engines. I believe that pictures can describe something far better then I can so I am giving you plenty of pics to look over. Ask any questions you need. Keep in mind that the engine is available locally for sale so I reserve the right to end this sale at any time. I was told this engine was rebuilt in the 80s and run at shows for a few years after, then it was retired until it came to me. The engine turns over nicely and has great compression. I see no reason it would not run. I have the history of this engine back three generations in the same family that will be turned over to the new owner. As a teaser bit of info the earliest known use of this engine was as a Bilge pump engine in a cabin cruiser back in the 30s. Postage and handling $95.00 to any US address.
