This auction is for a vintage Homer Laughlin Company (HLC) Salt or Pepper Shaker in the Orange color, commonly known as "Radioactive Red". The shakers, bowls and dishes get their unique color by using naturally occurring Uranium compounds in the glaze...the result is a bright orange color as well as some residual radio-activity. This shaker can be used as a geiger check source to allow safe checking and operations of a Geiger counter or Scintillator system. Measuring the activity on a modified and calibrated CDV-700 Geiger Counter using a pancake style probe, the total activity was roughly 21-23 KCPM, combined alpha/beta/gamma. The majority of activity is in the form of Beta with a small Alpha component and a very small gamma count. This particular saucer is about average in activity for similar HLC shakers, dishes and saucers. Pancake probes are more sensitive than a standard "Pickle" or "Hot Dog" style of probe, so your readings could be more or less than the readings I found, depending on the sensitivity of your probe. Pickle probes typically are about half as sensitive, or less, than a pancake probe and won't detect Alpha. The shaker itself is in above average condition with a minimal amount of wear and comes with it's original cork in the bottom. The pictures are from the actual item being auctioned. The shaker is free from any other defects that I could see. The top and bottom are about equal in activity. The shaker is in nice shape and could be used for either a geiger check source or as an everyday item...they have been in use for over half a century with no problems! Please look carefully at the pictures to get a better idea of the nice shape and condition this old timer is still in...don't let this measured and well preserved item slip away...they are getting harder to find every day! Payments are accepted using Paypal and Visa. Cash is accepted for face to face deliveries. Delivery is via USPS Priority service, please add $2.60 per $100 coverage ($1.30 per $50) if insurance is desired. Please advise me if alternate postal delivery is desired. Multiple auctions may be combined with notification from the buyer to do so. No refunds from lost/stolen items will be considered without insurance coverage. Returns are not typically considered unless there is damage or other mitigating factors...buyer's remorse is not a valid reason. Any returns must be shipped with adequate insurance and shipped at the buyer's expense unless otherwise agreed to. Overseas delivery will be done at actual costs. This auction is a contract and by bidding on the item you agree to abide by the provisions stated. Pa residents will need to add 6% sales tax.
