IN-CIRCUIT CAPACITOR ESR METER What does “ESR” mean? An ideal capacitor only has capacitance properties. While a real capacitor can be viewed as a resistor connected with an ideal capacitor in series. Since this kind of resistor does not exist physically, we call it Equivalent series resistance or “ESR”. It mainly caused by Cap’s down-lead connection and electrolyte drying gradually. When a capacitor degrades its ESR value will go up. Why use ESR Capacitor Meter? Many years in my repair career, I can not remember how many bad capacitors were detected by my ESR Meter in circuit. Every time when I was frustrated with my defective appliance, it is the ESR Capacitor Meter that solved the problem for many times. You can understand easily. If a capacitor is open or shorted, it is easy to detect by using a Multimeter. But in the most cases, the capacitors are neither open nor shorted. They can almost keep as the same value as the good ones have, but they do not work in circuits anymore. In this case, it is very hard to find a bad capacitor with Multimeter or even a LCR meter.
