Adivasi: Delta's Latest 'Indigenous People' 2008-11-15 The Adivasi (from Sanskrit ‘adi’ = first and ‘vasi’ = inhabitant) are the descendants of India’s indigenous people who were evicted from their territories during the Indo-Aryan migration (from 1500 to 500 B.C.) and had to move to isolated hills and forests. The new settlers developed the caste system to affirm and maintain their supremacy over the original inhabitants. The Adivasi were not included in this system and therefore literally became ‘outcasts’ (pariahs or untouchables) at the lowest rung of the social ladder. Today there are some 5700 communities in India of which 635 are officially identified as tribes (“Adivasi”). They represent about 8% percent of the Indian population, 4 linguistic families, different racial origins and several religions. What all Adivasi have in common, however, is their extreme devotion to their respective home lands that represent the essence of their existence: it is the home of their spirits and their dead, the source of their knowhow, of their lifestyle, their religion and their culture. The writing instruments in Delta’s limited edition dedicated to these indigenous people - the tenth in the collection - are shaped on a lathe in a special mother-of-pearl resin. The colors of their home lands (bronze and green) and of their traditional costumes (red and ivory) adorn all pens. A large ring engraved with an Adivasi motif decorates the cap, and a second one, with another engraving, the body of the pen. A traditional drawing is featured on the top of the cap and the clip is decorated with a 3-dimensional stylisation of a historical sculpture. The engraving on the 18-carat nib represents a design used on their traditional costumes. The ‘Celebration’ version, with 57 pieces worldwide has trimmings in solid 18-carat gold and Delta’s traditional lateral lever filling system. The sculpture on the clip is in gold-plated 925‰ silver).
