Now here is a real rarity!  A fine example of the elusive JEWELL 538 Counter Tube Tester.   The 538 is arguably the most impressive of these units, with its immense meter with nickle-plated bezel and its massive ebonite do wood cabinet. This early 30's counter top tester sports an 8" diameter meter to allow a service or sales representative display its test results to a customer. The other two, smaller meters are used to adjust line voltage and set operating point for the tube under test.  The 538 tests about 22 types of tubes, all that were in production or use in 1931-32, each of which is displayed on one of the scales of the large meter, with colorful designations of "GOOD", "BAD",  and "MAYBE". The operator will first plug the tube to be tested into The appropriate socket on the left side of the tester to check for shorts.  Should there in fact be a short the white circle to the left of the meter will light  up and display theword "SHORT".  If the tube tests clear of shorts then the tube is inserted into the appropriate socket on the right side and checked for quality. This particular example of the 538 is in very, very nice condition.  It appear to not have been restored, retaining its original finish and components with the exceptionthempower cord, which a previous owner has replaced with a cloth covered reproduction cord.  The tester is in working condition, with all rheostats and meters operating properly, though there is an intermittent open in a resistor in the grid bias circuit which causes the tube being tested to test very high.  I can replace this resistor for the winning bidder before shipping, should they prefer.  I have not replaced the resistor before offering this tester for sale in  case the buyer would prefer to retain original components and perhaps rebuild the original unit. Note both the advertisement which is taken from a late 1931 issue of Radio Retailing, and the photograph of the tester in use in a retail store. This exceptionally clean and original piece of early test equipment will be very carefully and double-boxed to insure it's safe arrival at your doorstep.
