If you're familiar with Ludlum instruments, you know that they manufactured many of those used for security, scientific and industrial measurements, i.e., radiation detectors, Geiger instruments, etc. but I cannot find any info on the shown model 316-2 'Gate Frisker'. As the name implies, it was probably used at airport or perhaps other embarkation/disembarkation checkpoints, logically; however, the sensor is encapsulated in an aluminum enclosure which contains some sort of 'counter' or other tube (as it's cased in a shock-resistant wrap) to possibly detect ionizing material or perhaps some other radiation. Ludlum made two-piece detectors in a variety of housings but this is the only one I've found with the sensor and controls all in one unit. More puzzling, there's only a small 3/32" jack which might be for an outboard battery pack as the interior has no battery clip nor (that I can see) place where batteries might be located. It's just that tight (photos). Controls include off/test/on switch; alarm LED and 'set'; over range and bk gnd change LED's and 'set' and some multi-turn pots beneath the small cover plate shown. Construction is all solid aluminum including the meter face cover, handle, main and extension housing with heavy welds where these parts join. Measures approx. 14" x 4" x 3-1/4" at the widest points and weight is nearly six lbs with most of it forward of the hand hold. Nothing that you'd care to carry around for an 8-hour shift!  Finish is a pebble beige/khaki paint which is in great shape with only a rub mark on the bottom of the extension (where it sits) and a few marks on the edges from use. Nice piece for the counter, security or airline industry collector!
