Medical MRI Analogic AN8101 5kW Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI RF Power Amplifier For Pulsed RF Service Introduction The all-solid-state AN8101 Radio Frequency Power Amplifier meets the stringent performance standards required by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners with magnetic field strengths from 0.15 Tesla to 1.0 Tesla. The AN8101 is a 5kW linear power amplifier optimized for pulsed service. Using patented Analogic technology, the AN8101 amplifies the RF signal using proprietary power FET devices, hybrid combiners and a low noise switching power supply. Combined with advanced packaging and cooling techniques, the amplifier provides 5kW peak envelope power and up to 500 Watts average RF power in a RETNA 19 inch chassis which is only 5-1/4 inches high. Linearity To obtain the ultra-linear advantages of a class A amplifier with the efficiency of class B, the amplifier is gated ON and OFF by a user supplied TTL type logic signal. This feature increases the "On Time" bias level for improved linear performance and decreases the noise floor and power consumption during the "Off Time". Modular Serviceability The RF Amplifier consists of a single field-replaceable unit (FRU) for easy servicing. Figure 1 shows the system block diagram for the amplifier. The RF Power Module accepts 1 mW of input RF signal and delivers five kW of power to a 50 load. Forward and reflected power samples are provided. The internal power supply converts single phase AC line voltage to the proper DC operational levels using highly efficient switching techniques. The control section includes the control of the amplifier operation, the display of operational status, and the customer interface connections. Analogic provides an unique hardware interface, but a more sophisticated custom interface can be provided if required. The RF amplifier front and rear panel will contain status and diagnostic indicators, a manual reset switch, a 15 pin D connector for remote customer interface and control, and the RF connectors. Advanced RF Packaging Amplifier frequency response is optimized by a unique multi-layer PC board layout with much less stray inductance and capacitance than is typical for such amplifiers; reactance of RF devices are tuned out at the optimized fixed operating frequency by special compensation components and construction techniques. Power devices run cool because of an efficient heat sink and fan cooling design. Protective Circuitry The AN8101 is thoroughly protected from abnormal RF input and output conditions. Power output devices are protected by the amplifier's unconditional stability, and by a directional coupler for internal and external monitoring of power-flow to and from the load. The amplifier is blanked when reflected power is too great or when the output device junctions exceed safe operating levels. Medical Applications The AN8101 Amplifier was developed for magnetic resonance imaging, to meet the continuing need for lower cost and smaller size equipment and also provide improved performance.
