Mini-Circuits ZHL-2-50P3 Wideband CATV Feedforward Amplifier.  Used Qty 1 with Data This is a Great Unit to use for learning basic Feedforward broadband circuit design because of its simplicity. Also an excellent Lab amplifier to use for amplifying CATV multi-tone signals from test generators and receivers. The ZHL-2-50P3 Amplifier is specified over the 50 to 1000 MHz frequency band and provides a gain of 24 dB typical. The unit uses a feedforward design to provide good cancellation of higher order intermodulation products when amplifying multitone frequencies up to a composite of +15 to +18 dBm output power. Two tone third order intercept is specified from mfg at +43 dBm and second order at +63 dBm. The 1 dB gain compression point is typically greater than +25 dBm. Figure 4 shows the listed mfg specifications and Fig 6 shows a plot of the gain and input/output return loss data for the actual unit listed for sale. (Note: The plots shown are the only RF parameters tested in a 50 ohm system for this unit).  The unit operates at DC of +24 volts at around 0.5 amps. DC must be applied to both DC feedthrus  to operate both the Main and Error amplifiers. The level of cancellation is shown on Fig 7 for both Feedforward Loop 1 and Loop 2 and is typically greater than 15 dB for most of the frequency band. The basic circuit block outline for the unit is shown in Figure 8 The unit is constructed using two same basic amplifiers. The Main Amp and the Error Amp. Each uses a Hybrid TO-8L amplifier mounted under the PCB driving a modified Motorola CATV Hybrid broadband Push Pull Amplifier See Fig 9, 10 and 11 internal assembly view. The couplers are dual apperture core type to provide a very wideband response. Each Loop is phased matched by using 50 ohm coaxial transmission lines. The IMD cancellation performance can be improved over a narrower frequency band by working the delay lengths, coupler lead length, capacitance and resistors values of both loops. The unit has two connectors labeled TP1 and TP2 for access to each individual Loop. Instructions are given on Fig 7 to test or align each of the loops using the test point connectors. Normally these connectors are not used after unit is aligned by mfg.
