New Precision Take-up Bearing for South Bend 9" Model A,B,C and All 10k Lathes From ILION Industrial Services, LLC Please note that these precision ground bearings are all brand new, made in the USA. They are sold as a set of two thrust washers and one bearing as shown above and come with complete instructions for installation on your 9" workshop model A, B, C or the model 10k lathe. The photos above show the headstock and the original take-up nut and washer for demonstration purposes only but they are not included in the kit.  If you are rebuilding your lathe, please take a moment to look through our other listings for illustrated lathe rebuild manuals and parts kits If the old hard fiber take-up washer on your SouthBend Lathe 9" or 10k is damaged, missing, or just plain worn out, this is what you will need to replace it.  The purpose of the original take-up washer was to remove excessive lateral play in the spindle (this is the slight left to right movement in the spindle when viewed from the front of the lathe).  The take-up washer was typically made of hard red fiber and contained a brass stud to allow the take up nut and washer to rotate together when the spindle was in motion.  The design was such that some clearance between the washer and headstock was necessary or the washer would wear out prematurely.  Often on older lathes, this washer has become damaged through improper adjustment, or  has simply degraded over time and is no longer suitable for its intended purpose.  When doing face plate turnings this excessive lateral play can often cause chatter or can cause drift when turning up to a shoulder.  The bearing set contained in this kit is designed to replace the hard fiber washer such that the majority of the lateral play can be removed from the spindle.  Essentially this bearing allows the slight preloading of the ball thrust bearing on the opposite side of the headstock casting.  This  preloading prevents the spindle from drifting laterally when under load.  The bearing dimension is 1-3/8" inside diameter x 2" outer diameter.  The total thickness of the bearing and two races together is .138" so it is only marginally thicker than the original fiber washer which is typically .07" thick.  The additional thickness easily clears the reversing gear bracket on most lathes from 1940 onward so the installation is a "drop in" and should  not require any modification.  Note that on some older lathes, the takeup nut is slightly longer than was standard and the washer was thinner so it may require minor refacing of the original nut to clear the reversing bracket once the new bearing is installed.  Should you have any questions about the fit, check your lathe and feel free to drop us a note as we would be glad to assist you.  If you are restoring a Southbend lathe, don’t miss your chance to pick up a set for your machine.
