Not needing two seperate pieces of equipment for these functions will save you some counterspace. One of the best aspects of these machines is that since you can combine steam and microwave cabilities, you are able to get quickly cooked, fresh vegetables that still retain their nutrients. A number of foodservice establishments who need to cook in large quanties have resorted to using bagged vegetables, greatly reducing their nutritional content and all around quality. It should be noted that there is a bit of a learning curve needed for people who are used to some of the older steam technology. However, Panasonic is very good at providing information and support. This steamer is great for nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and any other establishment wanting to mass product meals while keeping them healthy. The bottom line is, even though the more expensive steamers have their up-sides too, I'd recommend this steamer over a $10,000 steamer any day.
