WHAT IS COMPOSTING? Composting is an aerobic biological process by which microorganisms act on rapidly biodegradable material (crop residues, animal dung and urban waste), to obtain "compost", an excellent fertilizer for agriculture. Compost or humus can be defined as the result of a process of humification of organic matter under controlled conditions and in the absence of soil. Compost is a nutrient for the soil structure that improves and helps reduce erosion and helps the absorption of water and nutrients by plants. 2. COMPOST PROPERTIES • Improves soil physical properties. Organic matter contributes to stability of the structure of the aggregates of agricultural land, reduces the bulk density, porosity and permeability increases, and increases water holding capacity in the soil.
