Printers Letterpress Block Cut 4x6 Thirties Twenties POLISH Political CARTOON  Up for auction here is an antique original printers block cut for use in letterpress printing. The print is made from a zinc metal faceplate once attached to a hardwood block. I believe this was last used by an underground Detroit newspaper in the Thirties or Forties, though the cut may predate this. The plate bears an illustrated cartoon image which depicts (in the foreground) a jailer opening the back door of a paddy-wagon containing a prisoner dressed in prison stripes, while in the background a finely dressed porter opens the door (of a courthouse?) for a gentleman wearing a monacle with tophat & longcoat. Captions run along the top & bottom of the image. They are in the Polish language, and I have provided the best translation I could find: "PO OSTATNICH AFERACH ARYSTOKRAJI POLSKIEJ" ("After the recent Polish Aristocracy scandals") & "Panie hrabio, samochod zolechat ..." ("Lord Count, your' Car") & something else I couldn't translate. The cartoon is also signed by the artist but it's difficult to make out - looks like "eioa 44" to me but it is hard to tell. Definitely a rare political cartoon worth researching - I'm sure it has some historical significance & probably predates WW2. The plate measures 4"x 6" inches. The back is blank. Condition is VG- / Very Good -: There are a few defects to mention apart from mild signs of wear from age & use. This plate has several very mild surface scratches & some tiny flecks of white spotting, but very little wear overall. The plate is flat & should still print well but the major defect is that this plate is missing the wooden block that it was once attached to. It can easily be attached to a new block for printing purposes, or displayed as is. I have not attempted to clean the cut, which could result in a clearer image. The top & bottom edges of the plate bear the marks wear nails once affixed it to the block. Please take a look at the photos for further detail, & note that in some cases I have flipped or inverted the picture to make text legible or clarify the image. .....Take a look at the other letterpress blocks we have up at the moment for combined shipping deals - If you win several auctions the items will be packed together for a postal break~(I will package together multiple plates purchased for best shipping option - Flat Rate box to offset weight when many prints are purchased).......There are no handling charges in our auctions - you only pay the actual postage.
