Rare Texas Instruments Type 904                            Grown Junction Transistor The “904” is one of the first silicon transistors ever commercially sold.  Developed in 1954  by Texas Instruments, these are very rare, especially in original working condition.   Manufactured before the integrated circuit was invented, these sold for $100.00 in 1954 (equivalent to $800 today).   Grown Junction transistors were the first reliably manufactured silicon transistors.   Texas Instruments was the first company to offer production grown junction silicon  transistors, “beating out the competition by several years...”   Only germanium transistors were available before these were produced and germanium  transistors were leaky and slow and could not tolerate high temperatures.  The main  advantages of silicon transistors were lower leakage and wider operating temperature range. This transistor was produced in 1958. It is more than 55 years old. The 900 series  transistors were no longer made after the early 60’s as technology moved fast and  many new types replaced them. This is an original type 904 working transistor with an HFE (gain) measuring  approximately 11.  Individually bagged for protection, with full length gold plated leads.   Many vintage transistors had gold plated leads but competition eventually forced  manufacturers to drop gold plating due to high cost.  Gold plating improved reliability,  socketability, resisted corrosion, and looked great! This phrase is part of the folklore of Texas Instruments… “they got the silicon  transistor down in Texas!” Much information can be found in the following links: Link to “Texas Instruments Photo Gallery”: https://sites.google.com/site/transistorhistory/Home/us-semiconductor-manufacturers/ti/ti-photo-galler Link to “Early Semiconductor History of Texas Instruments”: https://sites.google.com/site/transistorhistory/Home/us-semiconductor-manufacturers/ti Link to “Transistor Museum”: http://semiconductormuseum.com/PhotoGallery/PhotoGallery_TI_900_Series.htm
