Rare Vintage 30's WPA Washington Metal Box! Rare Vintage 30's WPA Washington Metal Box! Here we have for sale a Rare Vintage 30's WPA (see story of WPA below) Washington Metal Box. I am not sure exactly what it originally held but it measures approximately 5" wide by 8-1/4" high by 2-3/8" deep. It is made of heavy sheet metal with a copper color finish. It has a hinged lid with a latch and a clip inside the lid to hold an instruction book or something similar and has 4 screw holes in the back to allow it to be mounted on the wall or to a piece of machinery. There is a handle on the long side for use in carrying it. It may have housed a first aid kit but I have some doubts that it as the WPA First Aid Kits were not normally mounted to a wall and they usually had "First Aid Kit" marked on them in some way. However, the handle on the box seems to indicate that at one time it was a mobile box and someone could have drilled the mounting holes. If anyone has any more information on what it might have held at one time, please let me know. Overall condition is good, showing lots of nicks and scratches, check out pictures for details and condition. In any case it is an interesting piece of American History and worthy of display! The Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. Almost every community in the United States had a new park, bridge or school constructed by the agency. At its peak in 1938, it provided paid jobs for three million unemployed men and women. Liquidated on June 30, 1943, as a result of low unemployment due to the worker shortage of of World War II, the WPA provided millions of Americans with jobs for 8 years. Most people who needed a job were eligible for at least some of its positions. Hourly wages were typically set to the prevailing wages in each area. But, workers could not be paid for more than 30 hours a week. Before 1940, to meet the objections of the labor unions the programs provided very little training to teach new skills to workers.
