While originally designed for adjusting, shaping and sizing eyeglass frames and earpieces, this electric heater tool is great for many other uses, especially for crafters, modelers, and laboratory technicians. Silvery post is aluminum, base is steel (with minor corrosion on bottom). Post is labeled with size numbers: 36 (top), 38 40, 42 and 44 (bottom). Tapered part of post is 4-3/8" long. Post has an oval or oblong cross section (about 1-1/4" x 1-3/8" at its top and 1-11/16 x 2" at bottom of taper), because eyeglass lens holes are mostly oval or oblong. Hole at the top is also oval or oblong - about 1/4" x 3/8" and about 6" deep. (In left image, the device is lying down with the post top resting on a poser for more accurate taper perspective.) Eyeglass frame tolerances are not that great and vary between frames, so you can have a situation where an eyeglass lens is a little too large in one or both dimensions to fit into the frame. Trying to adjust a cold plastic frame or earpiece can easily result in cracking and even breaking the plastic, ruining the frame. Back in the day, eyeglass frames were adjusted, shaped and sized using a thermal tool like this - now very rare. To shape a frame's eye hole, one places eye hole over the heated post and then slides it down to the appropriate size, then gently works the frame into the right size and shape. The frame lens hole shape need not be the exact same shape or size as the oval/oblong post cross section as the frame can be manipulated to contact only that part of the post needed to shape and size it. This thermal heater also works great with eyeglass earpieces. The earpiece is briefly inserted into the hole at the top, then remove the earpiece, and while it is still warm, gently adjust and shape it for fit. This unique thermal device has countless other great uses, especially for crafts people, modelers and laboratory technicians. One is not restricted to plastic eyeglass frames and ear pieces, but other plastic types of loops, bends and spirals can also be used with it. Also great for shaping and curving plastic rods and tubes to fit desired designs and uses. We used this to make curved black eyebrows for a mannequins, and for doing interesting Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving decorations, exhibits and displays (e.g. Christmas tree hangers). Can also be used for decorations and displays for birthdays, other special occasions, science projects and displays, theater sets, and even Halloween. Can also be used to melt plastic to seal plastic boxes and similar, holes in plastic, plastic seals, plastic tube tops, and the ends of nylon cords and webbing. Device can also be used to attach or repair loosened decals and patches with melt glue on them, such as caps, hats, shirts and jackets, even to quickly iron wrinkled ties and ribbons, and is great for heatshrink tubing (especially great for large sizes, thick, multi-walled and adhesive-lined heatshrink tubing). And for uses and areas where you need high localized heat but don't want blowing air with it. And this thermal heater works with some rubbers and some woods. While it get very hot, we have not attempted to use it to bend chemistry lab glass or to melt solder or hot glue sticks. Can also be used as a temporary and emergency space heater, hand warmer, dry towel warmer, or small area heater to prevent pipes from freezing. NOTE: This device requires some practice and skill to optimally use for eyeglass frames or model-making or crafts-type work. It only works well with materials which soften with heat. Since a few plastics and other materials do not soften with heat, some of which can be damaged by heat, cautiously test your materials first. In many cases, experimentation is required for optimum matching of materials to this device, and to develop good material shaping and sizing skills, but once you get the knack for using it well, it is a real joy and time saver to use.
