This listing is for New Samarium doped glass from VLOC P/N 977317 made for Quantronix. Part name: FSREC33.02x158.75-1.905S7010N, the abbreviation means Fused Silica Rectangular (shape) 33.02mm x 158.75mm x 1.90mm. The glass is both sides polished and uncoated. Samarium Doped Glass is borosilicate glass or fused silica which has been doped with Samarium. This doping causes the material to block most wavelengths below 440nm and therefore cuts off most of the UV output from the lamp - preventing UV damage to the laser system components. Because the UV is blocked, Samarium Doped Glass is also less prone to Solarisation. The UV absorption of Samarium Doped Glass causes it to fluoresce in the visible spectrum. Some of this fluorescence can be absorbed by the laser rod and can cause a slight increase in laser pumping efficiency. Samarium Doped Glass also absorbs the 1064nm output from the laser rod. If this is not absorbed it can be reflected back into the rod where it will be amplified. This effect, known as Lateral Depumping can effect the laser efficiency. Cerium Doped Quartz is the next most common flow tube material. Quartz is more mechanically rugged than Pyrex, and is more resistant to thermal cracking. The Cerium dopant filters UV almost as well as Pyrex and has the added advantage of fluorescing in the Nd:YAG absorption bands. Samarium Doped Glass is an even more effective optical filter and fluorescent material. However, its high cost limits its application mainly to military and scientific applications. Flowtubes manufactured from Samarium Doped Glass are typically four times the price of an equivalent flowtube made from Clear Fused Quartz.
