This is a LARGE approximately 7x2.5x2.5cm and heavy sodium Iodide scintillation crystal. If gross counting is all you need, this will do circles around plastic scintillation detectors especially for higher energy detection! Heck, even putting it against a PMT, IN THE BAG, bested the beloved 44-9 GM pancake probe. If you mount it professionally with optics glue the probe these could make would have extreme sensitivity to say the least. This is a experimenter grade crystal, good for general counting for someone who wants a super sensitive scintillation probe on a budget. It is water clear RAW CRYSTAL as pictured with some very minor surface yellowing as shown. These crystals were salvaged from a very high end gamma camera detectors that were very poorly engineered. It is a raw crystal that could be easily glued to any of my PMT detector tubes using high grade optical cement in a dry air or nitrogen purged glove box. You can make your own dry air glove box easily from a storage bin with landscaping plastic taped on top, some cheapo dish-washing gloves taped into it, with a fan and some damp rid inside to purge the moisture. This crystal is extremely hygroscopic and is shipped vacuum packed to keep it fresh until you need it. If you are willing to do the work, this crystal will make a detector far more sensitive than even large chunks of plastic scintillator, and 1000's of times more than a similar sized geiger tube. Instructions for potting this crystal and building the probe assembly will be supplied. These crystals alone sell for hundreds of dollars each, and are very hard to find- I have lots of laser and other unique stuff for sale this week.
