Spirometer Construction: Spirometer: It Is The Instrument Used To Measure The Vital Capacity (Vc). a) This Is A Double Walled Metallic Cylindrical Chamber Containing Water Between The Two Cylinders. The Tip Of The Bell Carries A Hook To Which Is Attached A Chain /Nylon Rope Which Passes Over A Frictionless Pulley. The Other End Of The Chain Carries A Weight Which Counter Balances The Bell. An The Volume Of Air In The Bell Increases, It Moves Up And Its Displacement Movement Can Be Recorded With The Help Of A Pointer Pivoted To The Other Head Pulley Rotates, The Pointer Sweeps Over The Circular Scale On The Pulley Through An Arc Proportional To The Rise Of The Bell. The Graduation On The Pulley Directly Gives The Volume Of Air Collected Under The Bell. Procedure: 1. The Space Between The Outer And Inner Cylinder Is Filling 3/4th With Water. 2. Let The Inverted Bell Dip Completely Into The Water; Apply Pressure From Above So That The Top Of The Bell Comes To Lie At The Top Of The Double Walled Cylinder, Now The Pointer Is Set To ‘Zero’ Manually. 3. The Subject Is Made To Stand Facing The Vital Graph Insert A Mouth Piece Between The Teeth And The Lips. 4. Ask The Subject To Take Deep (Maximal Inspiration Through The Nostrils And Hold The Breath. 5. Clip His Nostrils Either With A Nose Clip Or With Fingers (To Prevent Leakage Of Air) And Instruct Him To Exhale Completely And Forcefully Into The Mouth Piece. 6. Note That The Vital Graph Bell Is Raised And The Pointer Moves; Take The Reading On The Scale Attached To Pulley. 7. After A Pause Of 1-2 Minutes, Set The Apparatus And Take Second Reading. 8. Repeat The Whole Procedure For The Third Time Also; Make A Note Maximum Value Of The Three Readings To Get The Best Result. 9. After A Rest Period Of 2-3 Minutes, Repeat The Whole Procedure; Take The Three Readings, Each In Sitting And Lying (Supine) Posture Respectively.
