I also have 2 hardcover surveyor books that I will list 6/4. This older magnetic locator works great. I 1st thought the Stanley Group was the brand, but then after I googled them I found out it is a construction company. So, I do not see a manufacturers name on this. Maybe it tells you on the inside. The retired surveyor I bought this from demonstrated this for me. It has batteries in it already and works great. Holds 4 C batteries. Under the Stanley Group sticker is a opening. I believe the cover is missing. Its not big, so some tape would work to cover it. My personal fav is Duck tape, fixes most anything ;) He told me this is also useful for locating meteors.
