Ultrawide Bandwidth & Flat Group Delay We specialize in wideband/ultrawideband and flat group delay parts/subsystems up to 65 GHz, including mixers, amplifiers, directional couplers, hybrids, combiners/dividers, filters, modulators, demodulators and IQ mixers. Group delay is a measure of the transit time of a signal through a device versus frequency. Propagation time variation in different frequency components of a channel cause distortion to signal. To minimize distortion, it is imperative to choose parts with minimal group delay variation with frequency, hence, flat group delay response. VSWR/Return Loss of Mixer Unlike others, we do publish VSWR of our mixers and they are very important to any system. Conversion loss is measured with attenuators at all ports of the mixer and attenuation is calibrated out. Although this technique provides very smooth and broadband conversion curves, results are not achievable in real world since no load is totally 50ohm; especially active parts, couplers or combiners. As a result, designers are forced to use attenuators, increasing the cost and conversion loss, or live with poor performance/failed designs. BT&D offers mixers with ~6-8dB better return loss. A conventional mixer would need 3-4dB attenuation to achieve the same RL, making conversion loss 3-4dB worse. So when comparing conversion losses, please check the return loss of the mixer. If the components you are connecting to mixer has RL <10dB, we also offer high return loss mixers with integrated matched attenuators. Just add "-HRL" to the end of the part # in RFQ. Absorptive Lowpass Filters (ALPF) ALPFs have the amplitude response of the conventional Bessel filter with the added benefit of ultra-flat group delay. They absorb the stopband instead of reflecting it, thus mitigating the resonances. Our ALPFs have >23dB return loss, that is 10+dB over competition. Even with non ideal RL parts, like modulators, mixers and detectors, you can be sure not to have resonances with our parts. For minimal distortion, ALPFs need to have flat group delay till 2fo. Our typical GD deviation is +-0.035x1/fo till 2fo, that is +-4.5psec for an 8GHz ALPF. We can also customize the GD and amplitude response to your desired channel/devices. Please inquire. Wideband BPFs Traditional frequency domain filters such as Chebyshev and Butterworth have inherently poor group delay characteristics that cause jitter in the time domain by delaying parts of the high frequency data with respect to low frequency. The dispersive nature of these filters inject a significant amount of time domain distortion onto signal. Our filters offer flat group delay, thus minimizing distortion. Traditional filters have low bandwidth ratio, i.e. BW3dB/f0 or ratio of 3dB bandwidth to center frequency is small. They are mainly for low bitrate and narrow frequency band applications. As data rates increase pulse widths and bit periods decrease, thus the bandwidth of signals increase. For example, ultrawide band (UWB) wireless systems use 3.1-10.6GHz band . A BPF for this band would need a 110% bandwidth ratio. BT&D offers patent pending BPFs with upto 125% bandwidth ratio while maintaining very low group delay variation. Our filters are surface mountable and extremely compact. Please contact us with your requirements. Custom Parts and Modules While BT&D offers a comprehensive selection of catalog devices, we also encourage our customers to send us their precise bands of interest and associated power levels. We can build-to-order very quickly from stock parts and can usually create a custom part that offers higher performance than the closest catalog device. In addition, we make numerous other devices and multi-function modules. For specific details, we strongly encourage you to send us an e-mail at info at bt-d dot net or see our web page at www.bt-d.net
