Silica gel has a highly porous structure that traps (adsorbs) water molecules and can retain up to 40% of its own weight in water. The beads are impregnated with cobalt chloride that changes from blue to pink in the presence of moisture. When the silica gel beads are fully pink, it is time to either regenerate or replace the media. Silica gel is commonly used in compressed air treatment and gas purification equipment. It is often specified as a selective adsorbent for hydrocarbons, water, carbon dioxide, siloxanes, sulfur and other compounds.
