This could be an Antique or Vintage. It's made by the A S Aloe Company of St Louis. Mo. The company started making medical and surgical supplies in 1868 and was sold to another company in late 1800's or early 1900's. This balance scale is more than likely from the early 1900's, as it has the L A Address as well as the St Louis on the label. Don't know the correct age only some of the history of the company. The A S Aloe building was re built in early 1900's and finally torn down in 1958 or 59. The scale works, but looks like it needs to be calibrated. The black cloth material on the trays looks to be added recently, as I'm sure it didn't come with that material. The base of the scale looks to be forged or cast. It's in really nice condition. The trays move with ease as it works great. It measures only in Grams as most medical scales did for accurate measurements. There is a needle showing center with a thread rod at the base of it with a couple of round serrated round adjusting mechanisms that move on the thread rod while turned for calibrating it. It measures 1 to 10 grams. This could be used for measuring many items. The scale weighs 5 pounds or just under by 1/2 oz. This is prior to packing materials. It should weigh close to 6 pounds with safe packing. The size of it is about 14" wide, 6" deep and about 8 1/2" tall. The trays are each 6" diameter.
