ATHOL BENCH VISE - PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE MANY PHOTOS -  Old, heavy, fixed-base vise in fair to good used condition. Measures nearly 17 inches long and stands approximately 7 1/2 inches tall, not including the lower lip. Weighs nearly 45 pounds. Marked on one side: ATHOL M & F CO. - ATHOL, MASS. - MADE IN U.S.A. Marked on the reverse side: ATHOL - 614 - and 4 - 6. Athol Machine Co. was started in part by L.S. Starrett in 1868. Starrett departed ten years later to form Starrett Tools, who eventually absorbed Athol in 1905. This vise is marked Athol M. & F. Co., which might indicate that it was manufactured after Athol became a division of Starrett.  Jaws are 4 inches wide, with a maximum opening of 6 inches. This is a "blacksmith" version, heavy construction, stationary-base, with a corner lip that overhangs the front of the bench. Was mounted on a 1 inch thick bench. I will include the mounting hardware, but you may need longer bolts if your bench is thicker. Used condition - lots of typical dings & dents. Paint is very old, looks like several layers, probably repainted a few times. The small lip that protrudes above the screw ball has a sideways angle - not 90 degrees (see 4th photo below). Possibly made this way, but also possibly damaged at one time and "cleaned-up" at this angle. A previous owner used the slide that houses the screw as a hammering surface. Lots of small dings on top of the back half of the slide and some chips along the top edges. The sides near the top corners have been dressed with a file probably to remove some burring (see shiny spots in photos). Buttress-thread lead screw measures 7/8" in diameter. Screw is in good condition, oily, and has less than a 1/2-turn backlash.Slide has maybe slightly over 1/16" side slop when extended. Moves freely, front jaw travels complete distance both ways with "one-finger" effort. Milling marks on the slide are still mostly visible. Jaws are worn along the top edges and there are a couple chips on the right side. Fine crosshatching is lightly worn and mashed in places, though is mostly sharp and deep. No breaks, welds, or significant repairs. No rust or pitting. A stout little vise, built to last!
