Here we have a Vintage "THE REX" Engraving Block Ball Vise Jeweler Jewelry Engraver Gunsmith tool.  As you can see in the photos, it is clearly inscribed with the makers name "A.D. MUEHLLATT MAKER CINCINNATI", as well as "L.W. GERY INVENTOR" (SEE PHOTOS).  It was recently purchased from a collector of rare vintage tools who took very good care of his collection.  Upon brining this item home I noticed it was a bit dirty, so I took it apart, rubbed down all metal components with OOOO steel wool, put a light weight oil on  all moving mechanisms, rubbed the wooden ring with some linseed oil, and put it back together.    The vise works smoothly, operates well, looks to be complete (has original key, wooden and leather base/stand, metal center ring in base, and 4 tabs to hold work piece in place).  I would describe it as being in  in very good used condition.   As you can see in the photos, there is some chrome (or nickel) plating missing.  Everything spins, turns, and opens smoothly as it should.   The base/stand the vise sits on is made of a wood ring with a leather circular surround on top of the wood and a metal ring in the center of the leather.  Please note that the wood ring does have a split in it but this does not effect the operation of the vise.  The total weight of the vise and base is approx 20 pounds and 6 oz (very heavy and very well made). The actual metal ball measures approx 5 and 1/2 inches wide, and the entire unit together stands approx 7 inches tall from the bottom of the wooden base to the top of the moveable holders.  Please view all photos and determine condition for yourself.  According to the research that I have done, this particular vise is considered rare, dates to around 1910 - 1912 and one of the first of this variety.  It rarely comes up for sale and when it does, it is usually missing pieces.  As I said, mine here is complete and operates very nicely.
