Will hold objects of many different sizes and shapes in a suspended fashion, up to about 50 pounds (depending on weight distribution and the sturdiness of your "T" clamp system). DISPLAYING USES: The big problems with setting displayed items directly onto plates is that the bottom of the object is hidden from view (resulting in a poor display), object weight may damage the object or the plate, the plate surface is likely to be scratched from object movement against it, and water, oil, dust or dirt on the plate's surface may contaminate and damage the object and impede cleaning of the plate and object's bottom. This machinist plate will even hold off its plate surface in a suspended fashion odd-shaped and irregular-shaped objects, such as fossils, rocks, meteorites, tree ring sections, collectibles, equipment, tools, weapons, mechanical parts, etc., making this plate a great tool for museums, home and business displays, and shop work. MACHINING & CRAFTING USES: Great for reaching otherwise difficult spots for grinding, polishing, sanding, cutting, drilling, etc. objects, and is a stable platform for doing all kinds of crafting work. As a do-it-yourself, you should obtain or make whatever numbers and sizes of "T" clamps, other workholding clamps, or similar that you require for your specific needs. You can vary the sizes as you need to, for example, by using tall clamps and short clamps together. You can also vary the lengths of the threaded clamp rods or bolts. You can also vary the angles of the "T" clamp rod or bolt ends. You can use plastic or rubber cups at the ends of the rod pieces or bolts if you wish, if scratches or indenting are risks. You can also add a "T" clamp or post to the center hole to turn it into a laboratory stand in which the plate then becomes the base of the lab stand. HOW WE MADE OUR "T" CLAMPS: (1) For the six "T" clamps shown, we bought 15 standoff nuts, 1/4"-20; three-foot piece of 1/4"-20 threaded rod (or six 1/4"-20 bolts, 3" long); 12 large washers; six screws (1/4"-20, 2"-long, not shown, used to secure the clamp to the plate); and had in stock the six knurled knobs as shown (in their place, consider just using 1/4" bolts and perhaps threading on an extra nut to the head, or consider using six large necklace beads with holes, and cementing them onto the rod piece ends). (2) We cut three of the stand-off nuts in half, and six 3"-long pieces of the threaded rod. (3) We soldered the half nut pieces to the full stand-off nuts as shown (you can also cement, braze or weld them together). (4) We sharpened one end of each of the 3"-long rod sections. (5) We assembled as shown. Note that the bottom of the pan is recessed about 5/16", which means that bolt heads won't likely rest against your table tops. LIMITED QUANTITY.
