Crystal, 16.000 KHz (marked), NOS.  Case similar to HC-13 except wire leads dia .033" instead of plug-in pins.  Freq. marked on top; front reads:            NORTHERN ENG. LABS          NE-34XY          Date code 7 - 80          Case, w/o leads, is about 1.5" long    UNTESTED.  CAUTION:  LF crystals can be low Q and may not work in all circuits. ALSO they may tend to jump to or oscillate at harmonics  -- be sure your circuit can discriminate against this.  Maybe try a 74HCU04 (analog amp biased) with selected RC filter driving the crystal.  An LC trap may be required for the 3rd harmonic.  Do a variation of parameters to be sure your circuit can start and is stable.  DO NOT EXCEED EXCITATION POWER LIMIT of 100 uW (.1 mW).  UPDATE:    Tested one unit in the circuit shown in the 4th picture.  Startup took about 2 sec and the circuit would start at just over 2 V supply.  Counter shows 2 Hz high, but that's to be expected if the crystal is calibrated for a series resonant circuit.  Counter has been calibrated against a 5 MHz navy surplus ovenized standard which itself has NOT been checked against a higher authority.  Scope is 2 Volts per div. and the first picture is at a supply voltage of 5 Volts and the second at 10 volts.  Looks "happier" at 5 Volts.  100K resistor was designed to limit the drive to about 50 uW.  Asymetry of the  waveform is likely due to the asymetry of the CD4049 itself -- may look better (5 volts only) with an 'HCU04.  I have some 'C04s but have been unable to determine if they are truly single stage amplifiers.  Data was with the variable cap fully meshed (140 pFd) -- as I lowered the value, the frequency went slightly higher and finally the circuit quit working. R(0) circuit is difficult to get a reading due to the critical nature of the frequency.  Manually sweeping about 16 KHz ocassionally gave a meter reading, so I used a storage scope and got a peak reading of about 8 Volts P-P.  For the unit tested that's about an R(0) of 18 K Ohms.       NOTE:  Quoted shipping is for small First Class package -- 13 oz. limit.   This auction for a lot of 5 units.   My item #236
