Antique A Zeese and Company Chicago copper on wood letterpress printing block..over 100 years old!! Super Rare!! Welcome to our fundraiser. We are selling these items to help some local families...Please see our other auctions & buy it nows! This Letter Press Printer's Block was made by A Zeese and Company out of Chicago. Alexander Zeese was well known among printer's in the US and many foreign lands. Around 1857, he along with 2 others brought the first electrotype foundry to the west. In 1871 his business was wiped out by fire. Within one month he re opened his business under the name A Zeese and Company. Alexander Zeese has an interesting story and printing history..It is believed A Zeese closed or was sold in the late 1890's. What an amazing piece of history this small block is..(info from Google) This small printing block is copper on wood. In those days the blocks were sawed by hand and planed with a hand planer. As you can see A Zeese and company finely detailed the art work in this hen/rooster block. Information on the value of an antique A Zeese marked block is scarce and I was unable to find any estimate on the value. I also was unable to find any for sale or any that had sold. Please feel free to research for value . This printers block has a wood base with ink staining and cracks. The copper has scratches and edge wear.It is small...see pictures..and in addition has all normal age/use wear/tear issues and ink stains. There is also some paper residue on the bottom..I have no clue what this is and did not try to remove it...I have tried to take pictures that will allow you to see the condition.
