1860 Surveying Instrument Makers Envelope (f.w. & R. King)

#4984 ENVELOPE    F. W. & R. King of  Baltimore, MD  to  Col. James M. Lilley  of Staunton, VA. Measures  5 1/2 "  by 3", with Washington three cents stamp postmarked  Jun 10, 1860.                  Frederick W. King (1821 - 1829) and Richard King (1823 - 1905)  were brothers. Both were born in London, England.  It appears both came to America in the 1830's, and apprenticed as instrument makers in this country. In 1849 they went into business as F.W. & R. King and the business was sold to Edward Meister in 1875. James M. Lilley (1802-1876), a surveyor, patented an "Altitude Instrument"  on  Nov 10, 1857. The NMAH has a "graphometer" which is signed  "J.M. Lilley's PATENT NOV. 10, 1857"  and  "F. W. & R. KING, BALTIMORE 26". This is a one-of-a-kind item!
