Rough and Tumble Engineering: A Book of Instructions for Operators of Farm and Traction Engines, by James H. Maggard, originally published in the 1890s in Iowa City, Iowa. Reprinted by the Rough & Tumble Engineers Historical Association of Kinzers, PA in 1988 in celebration of its 40th annual Thresherman’s Reunion. Please note this book is new, not used. In addition to the original 180-page book, the Rough & Tumble Engineers Historical Association added 24 pages of club history and photos, which alone are a treasure. R&T’s Thresherman’s Reunion, I believe is around the third or fourth oldest in the country. One interesting thing I found in the club history is that Rev. Elmer Ritzman, the founding editor of Iron Man Album, was a major proponent of the first R&T show, and served as an R&T director for many years (see accompanying pic). The pictures of the traction engines within are not as clear as might be wished, but there are some unusual engines included. Traction engines from the following companies are portrayed: Gaar, Scott & Co., Richmond, Indiana J.I. Case, Racine, Wisconsin “Eclipse” engine, by The Frick Co., Waynesboro, Penn. Port Huron Road Locomotive, Port Huron Engine and Thresher Co., Port Huron, Mich. M. Rumely Co., LaPorte, Indiana A.W. Stevens Co. Marinette, Wisconsin Minneapolis Threshing Machine Co., West Minneapolis, Minnesota The Huber Manufacturing Co., Marion, Ohio O.S. Kelly Co., Springfield, Ohio Colean Manufacturing Co., Peoria, Illinois The last seven pages include reprints of advertisements I assume were in the original book. These ads are much clearer than the pictures of the traction engines. Union Steam Pump Co.’s Boiler Feeder (Battle Creek, Michigan) Mason-Kipp Manufacturing Co.
