1906-1908 Hand Crank U.S. AUTOMATIC PENCIL SHARPENER Co - Chicago, IL Offered here is a wonderful vintage hand powered PENCIL SHARPENER made by U.S. AUTOMATIC PENCIL SHARPENER CO of Chicago, IL. The label on the unit states it was patented Oct. 2, 1906 – May 26, 1908. To operate, the pencil would be placed in the round opening on the top. Then you crank the handle on the back, which rotates the three very sharp blades you see in the picture of the front, shaving the wood off the lead. The shavings fall into the removable metal drawer in the base, which you slide out to empty. Embossed on the front of the blade well is KEEP OIL CUP FILLED. It is in very good condition overall with no obvious corrosion. And it works. In inches it measures 2.75 W x 2 D x 5 H and weighs only 17.5 OZ. The bottom is fixed with a bracket to screw to a desk or wall if you want permanent placement. Really excellent vintage item for display as a conversation piece or even to use.
