The William Galloway Company, by The William Galloway Co. Waterloo, Iowa, 1909. Reprinted by Stemgas Publishing Co., Lancaster, Penn., 1988. 11 x 8 1/2 paperback, 43 pages. Please note that this book is new, not used. It is a reproduction, not an original. Stemgas was the company that used to publish the annual directory of antique engine and tractor shows. It was started in the early 1950s by Elmer Ritzman, the publisher of the wonderful, now gone. magazine devoted to steam traction engines, Iron Men Album. And who was closely associated with the group of people who started the Rough and Tumble Engineers Threshermen’s Reunion, the second oldest threshers reunion in the U.S. Stemgas was sold off in the mid-1990s, and many of its excellent reproductions such as this became difficult to obtain. I have just a handful of these, and after they’re gone, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get more. This is a high-quality reproduction of a sales catalog for the farm engines produced by the William Galloway Co. in the first decade of the 1900s. It begins with a glowing description of the company and the “guarantee bond” under which it operated, as a reassurance to potential buyers. Especially interesting is a two-page company history, which appears over the name of William Galloway himself. In it, Mr. Galloway describes how he came to buy, in 1908, the engine making business of Cascaden Manufacturing Co., also in Waterloo. Galloway writes that he always thought Cascaden’s engines were superlative, but because Cascaden sold directly to the public, Galloway never had the opportunity to carry the line. Until he bought the company. And that is how Galloway got into the engine making business. From the old man himself! On another page, Galloway describes his “Experiences in the Wind Mill Business.” This is followed by three full pages describing the manufacturing process, with 14 photos accompanying. Then there is a really cool two-page cut away aerial view of the Galloway manufacturing plant. Seven pages are next devoted to describing and showing the various components of the engines, with emphasis on why they are better than anyone else’s, etc., etc. There are about a dozen pages showing various engines and other farm equipment, along with prices. The remainder of the catalog contains freight rates, customer testimonials, and so on.
