While current generations of machinery handbooks do an excellent job of covering modern machining methods, CNC (computer numeric control) and all kind of modern fantasy stuff (very cool) they often forget the we sometimes need less to understand how laser measurement of as surface is accomplished than rather more basic things, such as how to determine the radius of a broken pulley when we have only a piece of the rim how to create a new one or how to calculate the right loads or forces on a tap or grinding wheel for safe or efficient use. Modern handbooks are filled with great and accurate and useful information, IF we are using state of the art but if we are needing old fashioned knowledge to fix things, do basic design, understand processes for machining, grinding, welding, annealing, or other processes at a basic practical level, they often leave us with fancy calculus to do, rather than simple concepts, rules of thumb, tables, and easy algebra. Me, I like the practical and simple down home advice of these older texts and handbooks. Bet you will too! Of course, if you are interested in the history of machine processes, there are some great tid-bits herein. If you are interested in repairing or recreating older machinery authentically, this is a great guide. If you are a practical machinist and want a good guide with practical advice, computational tips, tradecraft, this is a great book! So whatever your focus and whatever your tools are, this older tome / handbook is wonderful. Now I have to admit, everything is in English units, feet and pounds and horsepower, so if you are a modern dedicated metric sort, you might have to do a bit of converting, but the fundamentals remain the same. On the other hand, if you still do your work in English units, no conversion needed. There is not a chapter here that i did not learn something significant from and I have been doing machining and machine related work from aerospace to auto-racing most of my life. Great illustrations of older machines, machine fasteners, tools, fixtures, gee everything! including illustrations of how to solve geometrical problems or methods. gotta love these books that are more interested in educating us, than many of the modern ones that are more interesting trying to convince us how truly smart the authors are! Simple, down to earth, practical. No matter what machine process or metal working you are involved in, it is treated here and treated well and practically, from broaching to annealing, from hardening to diamond machining it is all here! Enjoy this one Preface Every man engaged in mechanical work of any kind, regardless of his position in the shop or drawing room, frequently requires information that is seldom remembered and is not usually available when wanted. With this in mind it has been our endeavor to present in convenient form such data as will be of value to practical men in the various branches of machine work. While some of the matter included may seem elementary, it was considered necessary in order to make the work complete. Much of the information has never been before available to the mechanic without tiresome search and consultation. We believe that the Dictionary section will be found of service to the younger mechanics and in helping to establish standard names for various parts which are now more or less confused in different sections of the country.     Contents Screw threads cutting screw threads Standard proportions of screw threads Measuring screw threads Pipe and pipe threads Twist drills and taps Taps Files Work benches Soldering Gearings Milling and milling cutters Cam milling Indexing Milling cutter reamer and tap flutes Cold saws Turning and boring Grinding and lapping Grinding wheels and grinding Lapping Reamer and cutter grinding Oilstones and their uses Screw machine tools, speeds and feeds Speeds and feeds for screw machine work Punch press tools Broaches and broaching Bolts, nuts and screws Tables of cap and machine screw dimensions Tables of A.S.M.E. standard machine screw dimensions Nut and bolt tables Bolt heads Miscellaneous tables Callipering and fitting Press and running fits Dimensions of keys and keyseats Tapers and dovetails Measuring tapers Diagrams and tables of standard tapers Shop and drawing room standards Standard jig parts Tables of dimensions of standard machine parts Miscellaneous tables Miscellaneous information Wire gages and stock weights Horse-power, belts and shafting Steel and other metals Steam hammers and drop forging Knots, eye-bolts, ropes and chains General reference tables Shop Trigonometry Dictionary of shop terms   We at Rocketbrain are dedicated to finding, publishing and distributing exceptional knowledge found in rare books.
