1939 Filing System Manufactured by The McCaskey Register Company Description This is one of the neatest pieces I have come across in a long time.  Not only because of the piece, but because of the story.  In 1939 Harry P. Kellogg sold state of the art filing systems.  In 1939 the filing system looked like a mousetrap, except for the spring activator.  The metal filing mechanism could be attached to a wall in a vertical system or placed horizontally and the the card, letter, etc., was placed beneath the spring loaded piece of meta - see pictures for a clearer understanding.  In this case Mr. Kellogg sold 10 of these supposed filing systems to Willard Haselton.  The spring filing system was manufactured by the McCaskey Register Co. out of Alliance, Ohio.  The problem was Mr. Kellogg the wrong filing system to Mr. Haselton in Wilmington, New York.  Instead of receiving a filing system to hold letters, cards, etc., he received ten of them to hold cast iron.  Mr. Kellogg sent a letter to Mr. Haselton, copy included, explaining the mix-up and sending Mr. Haselton the correct ten filing systems and cover the postage paid.  The letter is signed by Mr. Kellogg.   The metal filing system, just one of them, has been mounted on a wooden plank for all time to preserve it.  There is a note of explanation about the McCaskey Register Company on the wooden panel, the years of operation of the company and when it merged with The Victor Adding Machine Company.  On the metal filing piece is a letter identifying it as coming from The McCaskey Register Co.  This piece of history chronicles life in the business world in 1939.  Before computers or the microchip, letters, cards, notes, etc., were filed by hand.  A system had to be in place to make it efficient and effective.  Here is a piece of that history and I can see this in my mind's eye in an office in 1939 holding an important order or a letter to a customer.  The fact that the letter correcting a bad purchase about this filing system is included is beyond belief.  FOR THOSE COLLECTING THIS TYPE OF VINTAGE HISTORY, THIS IS A MUST. The wooden panel display board is roughly 11inches wide and 14 1/2" tall.  The metal filing system sits in the middle.
